Working in futures teams

Working in futures teams is exciting, not least because of the topics, thinking and people involved. Applying the techniques to complex issues can be both challenging and rewarding. But, what do futures teams need in between those activities? What makes a futures team work well?

First, as in any group activity, it is important to recognise team dynamics and working styles and to nurture individual traits.

Second, the team should pay attention to softer strategy elements, such as behaviour, culture, values, momentum and principles, which sometimes go unnoticed. Harder strategic elements like vision, mission, goals and objectives should already be a core aspect of the futures task.

Team members should express their own areas of particular interest and should listen to the expressions of others. The team can help to build a cohesive approach and help to maintain momentum by capturing a small set of guiding principles  that will last for the project's duration.

Guiding principles

These are a small collection of memorable expressions of behaviour, where this behaviour nurtures a desired culture and which underpins a particular vision. Guiding principles represent the inherent behaviour that individuals turn to and depend on when achieving a common aim. They are not rules, objectives or habits. Rules are too prescriptive. Objectives are inflexible and habits are typically out-of-date routines. See also: We the people: Journal of brand management, Patrick Harris.

A third important aspect of working in futures teams is to value the journey itself. There will already be emphasis on a project's outputs, but the journey is also worthy of recognition.

The nature of futures work will provide opportunities for learning. It challenges participants and exposes them to 'big ideas' about important topics.

In their work, many people seek learning environments and welcome being set fresh challenges.

As communication is important, a futures team should meet regularly to discuss the project and the learning process they are undertaking.

Finally, futures teams should celebrate success together. Recognising achievement and responding to it as one team with one voice, is a sure sign that a solid team is in place and enjoying its work.
